Vo Thi Kieu born with tiny legs

Vo Thi Kieu was born with a normal upper body and tiny legs. At 41 years old, her legs are only 50 cm long, making it difficult for her to move around. Her mother is bed-bound and her brother is blind in one eye. Her whole family depends on government allowances.

Ten years ago, she got married and gave birth to two children, 9-year-old Vo Ngoc Cam Ly and 7-year-old Vo Minh Lam. But her husband abandoned them and she has heard nothing from him then. Kieu sells lotto ticket for a living and is given a monthly allowance of VND2m.

"My children legs are bowed so they can't walk normally and they just shake their bodies around,"

A charity group raised funds to allow the children to be brought to hospital to have their legs straightened. Kieu said all of her hopes now rested on her children's chance to walk.

"I hope that their legs will be fixed so they can walk normally and suffer less pain," she said.

Nguyen Thanh Thuan, head of Gia Khanh Hamlet, said despite difficulties, Kieu always work hard to support her ailing family members. A charity programme recently gave Kieu's daughter a scholarship. She will be given VND500,000 a month until high school graduation.

"However, the family still has to face many hardships and need support from the community," Thuan said.
