HCM City Department of Industry and Trade have ensured the sufficient supply of essential goods for local people amid the Covid-19.

Since the Covid-19 outbreak in HCM City, many local residents have rushed to buy necessities following the city’s decision on social distancing measures.

According to Bui Ta Hoang Vu, Director of the department, despite social distancing regulations, local markets, supermarkets and food shops are still allowed to operate normally.

Necessities are readily available and prices for some goods had even fallen in some cases, Vu said. People are advised to avoid stockpiling goods and panic shopping could lead to Covid-19 infection risks.

According to Vu, the department has worked out scenarios and plans to ensure the supply of goods. Sellers of basic goods have been asked to boost online sales.

Every day, around 8,000 tonnes of vegetables are brought to the city’s three wholesales markets of Binh Dien, Hoc Mon and Thu Duc. This can meet 70% of local demand. Meanwhile, the remainder will be supplied by supermarkets, shopping centres and big distributors.

Some 700 tonnes of pork and 800-900 tonnes of seafood are provided for the city daily.

HCM City has also co-operated with 22 cities and provinces on a price stabilisation programme.
