Children in mountainous area need new classroom

Students at a school in the mountainous province of Ha Giang are in need of financial support.

The school has to borrow the village's earthen house for 14 children

San Chai School Site under Thu Ta Nursery School is far from Bac Quang District centre. The school is located on top of a hill and surrounded by terraced rice fields The road leading to the school have deteriorated with various potholes and narrow turns. It takes about five hours to travel the 100km road.

Hua Thi Ninh has been teaching at San Chai School Site for nearly a decade. Ninh said the school had about 40 children. Due to the lack of space, the school has to borrow the village's earthen house for 14 children aged from two to three while 26 other children stay together in a 30-square-metre pre-built room donated to the school five years ago. The children also have to go home for lunch.

However, because of harsh weather, their classroom has badly deteriorated.

Hoang Thi Thom, director of Thu Ta Nursery School, said, "Even in winter, the children also wear very thin clothes and are barefoot."

Ly Van Phu, vice chairman of Thu Ta Commune People's Committee, confirmed that the lives in San Chai Village were very difficult as the villagers mostly depend on their fields to live by. However, the children remain very hard-working and love to go to school. They can walk kilometres to go to school despite the rough mountainous paths.

The teachers hope that they can get a more suitable classroom so that all children to study in a better environment.
