70 medics to go to UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan

Vietnam will send 70 medics to South Sudan to work at a field hospital as part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission.

Medics ready to fly to South Sudan

The deployment ceremony for Vietnam's level-2 field hospital rotation 3 participating in the UN mission in South Sudan was held in HCM City on March 23. All 70 medics have received training in foreign languages, peacekeeping and survival skills. They were also vaccinated against Covid-19.

Deputy Minister of Defence Hoang Xuan Chien transferred the prime ministerial decision and national flag to the medics at the field hospitals. Representatives of HCM City People's Committee, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Public Security, Vietnam Women Union, Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations, embassies and general consulates in HCM City attended the ceremony.

In March 2020, the Ministry of Defence issued the decision to set up a level-2 hospital rotation 3 team to replace a level-2 hospital rotation 2 in South Sudan.

The medics will leave for South Sudan in two groups. The first group will leave on March 24 and the second group will leave on April 21.

The first field hospital was set up in October 2018 and the second one was in November 2019. For the past three years, the field hospitals in South Sudan have treated 2,000 people and received many serious cases.
