Phu Yen family calls for help for ill teenage daughter

A family in Phu Yen Province are in need of financial support to help cover the hospital fees for their daughter’s treatment.

Tran Duc My is a guard for a school in Hai Rieng Town. Every day after work, he travels over 60km to Phu Yen General Hospital to take care of his 17-year-old daughter who is being treated for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a blood disorder that results in blood clots forming in small blood vessels throughout the body.

My's youngest daughter, Tran Thi My Trinh, suddenly fainted and had a non-stop nosebleed last July. Her treatment cost is enormous for the family even with health insurance. My had to put up his house and some land as collateral for a VND90m (USD3,900) loan.

Trinh's health got better after the initial treatment. But she still needs to go to HCM City for check-ups every two weeks.

"The money has run out and the cost for each trip to HCM City is over VND3m (USD130). And we still have to pay the bank's monthly interest of VND1m. Our salaries are about VND6m," My sadi.

On March 5, Trinh suddenly bled from ears, nose and eyes. Her parents donated their own platelet for Trinh while they tried to figure out a new way to earn money. My's eldest daughter is still trying to find a job and the second daughter is studying at a university in Danang.

After hearing that her parents planned to sell their house, Trinh ran from the hospital and stayed home. Her teachers and friends had to visit to encourage her to go to the hospital.

Dr Truong Xuan Hoa from Phu Yen General Hospital said, "Trinh needs a long treatment and the cost can be tens of millions of VND. It's dangerous if she is not monitored and treated on time."
