Nguyen Thi Thanh receives the donation
Thanh and her husband didn't have any children so she adopted an abandoned child. After her son divorced, he brought home two children and left. Thanh has to raise two children on her own and has not heard anything from her son for the past 10 years.
Thanh mostly collects scrap to earn little money. While everyone was preparing for the Tet Holiday, Thanh and her grandchildren wandered to the streets to collect scrap.
After their story was published, many people have visited and given them gifts including clothes, food and cash.
"I'm a bit tired because of diabetes over the last few days so I couldn't go out to work but my grandchildren always collect scrap after school. Yesterday, one of my grandchildren fell when he was riding a bicycle. Luckily, it's just minor bruises," she said.
After receiving the donations, Thanh thanked everyone who helped her.
"I'll save up the money to raise our grandchildren," she said.
Nguyen Thi Mai, head of Tran Phu Primary School also thanked the donors.
"The school has waived additional fees for both of them in this school year and provided financial support for lunch. We'll consult the family on how to use the money wisely. At first, some of the money will be used to pay for food and medicines for Thanh. The rest will be deposited," Mai said.
