Nguyen The Hung and his children
Hung said the accident occurred at work when his team was putting timber on a truck.
"The truck suddenly suffered brake failure and fell into a deep cliff. I was able to jump off the truck while my wife was stuck on it. I thought I had lost her. Luckily, we were saved quickly. My wife suffered from traumatic brain injuries, pulmonary spleen fracture and other injuries. She is still being treated at Vietnam-Germany Hospital," he said.
However, doctors said her survival odds are very low. After one week in the hospital, her condition improved very slowly and there is a high chance that she could fall into a vegetative state. Even if there is a miracle, the treatment cost will be high and time-consuming.
"It hurts so much. Sometimes I wanted to give up but I thought about our children. My wife is still in a dire situation. How can we continue working to support our children now?" Hung said.
Hung and Van have five children together. Their oldest child is 15 years old and the youngest is only three years old. Their whole family depends on the little incomes from peeling acacia barks. They don't have health insurance and their relatives are also too poor to help them.
After the accident, Hung's oldest daughter has taken care of the family and looked after her siblings.
"My sisters and brothers often cried for our mother at night, which made me cry too. I don't know what to do but hug them. When will my mother get better?" she said.
Phan Duc Tien, chairman of Quang Thanh Commune People's Committee, said, "We have called for help for them. However, we can only help them so much."
