Hundreds of people lined up outside the Japanese Embassy in Hanoi on the early morning of November 25 to apply for visas.

On November 20, the embassy announced visa applications for short-term commercial purposes such as market research, signing contracts, cultural exchanges, training programmes and long-term stay.

The announcement was made after a long suspension due to Covid-19.

Since 5 am on Wednesday, lots of people queued up at the embassy on Lieu Giai Street, Hanoi, for their turn. Two hours later, two rows of people stood outside the embassy.

Each group was called in turn to be given with numbers for their application.

A man from Hanoi, who is working for a labour export company, said he took 10 sets of dossiers to the embassy for visa applications. After being accepted by the embassy, he and his company’s workers were very happy as they had waited for this for more than seven months.

“Due to Covid-19, my company has had to reduce staff and our salaries have been cut by 50-70%. The embassy has agreed to grant visas for 31 people of our firm,” he noted.

Nguyen Thi Hoa had to take a coach from the central province of Nghe An to the embassy from midnight.

It took Nguyen Lan Huong hours to travel from Haiphong City to the embassy for a visa. She wanted to get the visa for her granddaughter so that she could be united with her parents in Japan.

After arriving in Japan, Vietnamese visitors will be quarantined for at least 14 days for Covid-19 prevention.
