Rubbish backlog in Hanoi.
After Nam Son landfill closed from October 23 to 26 due to the dispute over compensation and resettlement with households living nearby, rubbish in Hanoi has piled up. Even after the landfill opened again, the rubbish still hasn’t been quickly treated with.
Tran Hanh from the Management Board of Cau Giay District's Investment Projects said 350 tonnes of rubbish was discharged every day so after four days they had about 1,400 tonnes of backlogged rubbish.
"We’ve constantly urged the contractors to deal with environmental pollution and asked Vinh Yen Urban Environment and Service JSC to quickly transport the rubbish to landfills. However, because rubbish trucks are only allowed to operate on the streets after 7.30 pm the backlog is still high," said Trinh Thi Dung, vice chairwoman of Cau Giay People's Committee.
On November 3, the district people's committee asked the city police and Department of Transport to let the rubbish trucks operate during the daytime and has gained approval. The backlog is expected to be completely deal with by the end of the week.
Cao The Cuong, director of Vinh Yen Urban Environment and Service JSC said there were 600 tonnes of rubbish left. They have sent more vehicles and employees to clean the place. As of 11 am on November 5, six trucks have collected 60 tonnes of rubbish and moved to the landfills.
After Nam Son Landfill reopened, Cau Giay District transferred 320 tonnes of rubbish a day from October 26 to 29. From October 30 to November 3, 400-410 tonnes of rubbish were transferred to the landfill daily.
