"Those storms will mostly affect the central region," he said. "There may be some storms appear in early 2021 and affect the south-central coast and the southern region."
He continued to warn about flashflood and landslides due to the steep terrain. The south-central coast and the southern region should also be prepared to storms that appear late in the year. All preparations should be done now to minimise damages.
Vu Duc Long, deputy director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that there will be two to three floods in the central region and south-central coast in late 2020.
According to Ho Quang Buu, vice head of Quang Nam People's Committee, the natural disasters and weather in this area have developed very complicatedly. There will be one or two storms that will directly affect Quang Nam this year. The flood will be more severe than in 2019.
The authorities in Quang Nam have asked concerned agencies to tighten monitoring over reservoirs.
Thua Thien-Hue Province, which suffered severe damage after a storm in September 2020, is forecasted to be the hardest-hit province this year. Phan Ngoc Tho, chairman of Thua Thien-Hue Provincial People's Committee, said they had asked the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, and the provincial Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue to review and improve forecasting work after the storm in September 2020. He also asked the Department of Construction and the provincial people's committee to develop a plan about tree planting in the area.
Thua Thien-Hue People's Committee has made plans to relocate nearly 24,600 households of 93,700 people. Plans to ensure safety for 65 reservoirs in the area. According to Khanh Hoa Province Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, co-operation between agencies hadn't been good enough and public awareness was still low.
Van Ninh District in Khanh Hoa Province alone said they would need to relocate 8,800 people and have plans to shelter fishing boats and irrigation constructions.
