Nghe An villagers call for help to build a bridge

 

Huoi Thum Village isolated by a stream

Ky Son is a border district that is 250km away from Vinh City. It is also one of the poorest mountainous districts in Nghe An and Huoi Thum Village is the most difficult case. With mountains on one side and a large stream on the other side, Huoi Thum is often isolated during the rainy season. Adults struggle to cross the stream to travel outside and the children can hardly go to school.

Huoi Thum has over 40 households with 209 people. Most of them are from the Kho Mu ethnic group and their lives depend on farming and the forest.

Seo Kham Huong, head of Huoi Thum village, said, "The people here have a very difficult life. Many children were sent to live with their grandparents after their parents divorced and their daily meals consist of just sticky rice with salt and pepper."

 

People have to cross the stream to school or work.

During the rainy season, the students usually have to stay home for a whole week and the villagers can only go out when the water level drops. If anyone wants to cross the stream, they will have to hang on to a rope that connects the banks and try to cross to the other side.

The villagers also went to the forest to find woods and tried to build a temporary bridge. But the bridge was always swept away by the rain and flood. It's very risky for children to go to school.

Lau Ba Cho, vice chairman of Na Ngoi Commune People's Committee, said, "We really understand the need to build a bridge but we currently don't have the budget for it. We hope we can get help so the villagers overcome their difficulties."
