Deteriorating schools common in mountainous areas

Teachers and students at a school in Tuyen Quang Province are in need of financial support to upgrade their facilities.

As heavy rains occur in late August, the roads leading to Linh Phu Commune also became much more difficult to use. According to police in Chiem Hoa District, if the rain falls for one hour, water will overflow from the upstream into the streams and river and the spillways. It's impossible to travel during such times.

Mai Thanh Xuan, headmaster at Linh Phu Primary School said, "Inside, everything looks really bad. This used to be Linh Phu Secondary School from 1960 to 2001. Then it was divided into Linh Phu Primary School and Linh Phu Secondary School. There are three school sites under Linh Phu Primary School. Our school site has seven classrooms."

Two out of the seven classrooms have deteriorated so badly over time that both teachers and students are afraid that they may collapse at any time. Two classrooms cover 60 square metres but have many cracks on the walls.

"We all have to use these classrooms despite our fears because we don't have enough money to repair or build a new one. The parents and teachers tried to fix it temporarily," he said.

Two other classrooms also deteriorated and had to be closed three years ago. They are being used as storage rooms. In addition, the roofs of the staff rooms are leaking. Xuan said it would cost VND80m to VND100m to repair the classrooms.

Linh Phu Primary School has 370 students. The teachers had to persuade the students and their parents to let them go to school because many of them live far away. Some students live 12km from school.

"Linh Phu Commune is the poorest commune in our district. There are 11 ethnic minority groups including Tay, Dao, H'Mong and Pa Then. 32% of them are poor households and lack education," said Nguyen Vinh Lac, party secretary of Linh Phu Commune. "We often called for donations to help the children but everyone is poor so it's really hard. Our fund for 2020 has been used for building roads and sewers."
