An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale hit Muong Te District in the early hours of June 16 afternoon, damaging some public works and injuring four local children.
The children from Ban Giong Nursery School were injured after being hit by fallen ceiling plaster during lunch break.
At around 11:45 pm on June 15, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake also occurred in Lai Chau Province.
On Tuesday, Lai Chau City saw a light earthquake, which, however, caused no loss. On the same day, Lao Cai suffered a small earthquake for around 5-6 seconds.
Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, head of the Institute of Geophysics, said it was impossible to warn about the timing of the earthquake. The northwestern region of Vietnam regularly faces many small earthquakes.
Localities are urged to take preventive measures, including checking and reservoirs and households and the rescue force for possible evacuations.
