"He has had a fever since yesterday and he is hungry for milk but we don't have money," Hao said.
Because she doesn't have money to buy milk powder, she has to make weaning food from rice flour for the baby since he was two months old.
Hao's husband died 30 years ago, leaving behind four children. Hao said all of her children were slow and their minds were stunted. Two of her children got married but divorced soon later. One of them left home years ago because of poverty.
"Quan's mother, who is my third daughter, is mentally ill since she was small. I still have to bathe her at 38 years old. I don't know who Quan's father is," Hao said. "I had hoped that Quan would be her pillar later but then he was diagnosed with thalassemia and doctors said he should be brought to Hanoi. But it's been three months and I still don't have enough money for that."
Hao used to do odd jobs for some money but her health is also deteriorating and it's getting harder and harder to move because she has osteoarthritis.
Nguyen Van Trung, head of Hiep Hoa District Red Cross Organisation, said, "All of her children are poor and can't help much. We have visited her many times to help but it's not enough."
