The early ripening litchi have been grown in Phuong Nam Ward since 1966.

The early ripening litchi in Phuong Nam Ward with the brand registration approved by the Intellectual Property Department in 2013 has become one of Uong Bi City’s key crops.

The litchi output in the ward this year is estimated at around 4,000 tonnes, nearly double last year. Meanwhile, the rate of spoiled fruits is quite low.

Nguyen Thi, a local grower, said that the wholesale price was around VND26,000-25,000 per kilo. Sometimes, it is even up to VND45,000. With 300 litchi trees, her family are expected to make VND180 million (USD7,826) in profits.

The ward is home to some 320 hectares of litchi and each household has 100-200 litchi trees.

This kind of litchi ripens 3-40 days earlier than ordinary varieties.

According to Hoang Van Ninh, a litchi garden owner, thanks to the application of the Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices (VietGAP) over the past four years, litchi productivity and quality have improved.

This year, total litchi revenues in the ward would reach VND90-100 billion, against VND50 billion in 2019 and VND63 billion in 2018.
