Eight more Covid-19 patients recover in Vietnam

Eight more Covid-19 patients were discharged from the Hanoi-based National Hospital for Tropical Diseases on Monday afternoon.

Eight more Covid-19 patients were discharged from the Hanoi-based National Hospital for Tropical Diseases on Monday afternoon.

According to the hospital, the eight patients tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 in at least two latest consecutive tests and have all fully recovered from the disease.

"The patients include a 51-year-old man who has serious kidney failure and is on dialysis," the hospital said.

With the release of these eight patients, 249 out of 288 Covid-19 cases have been successfully treated in Vietnam and no deaths have been reported so far.

Meanwhile, the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City has just received a Covid-19 patient whose condition has worsened after several days being treated at Bac Lieu Provincial General Hospital.

Director of the hospital, Nguyen Van Vinh Chau, announced on Monday morning that the 50-year-old woman was admitted in a serious condition, with high fever and heavy coughing.

"The patient is having to use a ventilator," Chau said.

Speaking about the British pilot who has been hospitalised since March 20 and is now the most serious Covid-19 patient in Vietnam, the doctor said that they have not yet found a suitable lung to carry out a lung transplant for him and he is still in critical condition with both of his lungs condensed, while his liver enzymes and infections have increased.

At a meeting with international organisations on a new Covid-19 treatment and testing strategy held last Thursday, the Health Ministry said they were considering a lung transplant for the 43-year-old patient who has been critically ill for some time.

Doctors from leading hospitals in Vietnam held a telemedicine conference on May 10 to discuss a lung transplant for the patient but found that at present there is no lung suitable for his transplant.

According to the doctors, the patient, who weighs 100 kg and is 1.83 metres tall, is obese with a body mass index of 30.1. He suffers from a blood clotting disorder and cytokine storm syndrome, an intense immune response where the immune system releases a lot of cytokines through the bloodstream which works against the body.
