Widow calls for help for her children

A woman in Hanoi is in need of financial help to support her small children after her husband died, leaving huge debts behind.

Nguyen Thi Thu Huong said she felt guilty since she couldn't go home when her husband died.

"I had a C-section on April 17. The doctors had to remove my uterus and gave me nearly 10 litres of blood. I nearly died. But then the next day, I was told that my husband was dead. I wanted to go home to attend his funeral at least but my condition at that time didn't allow me to," she said.

Huong's husband, Nguyen Van Thang, met Huong when he went to Hanoi to find jobs. Their family was happy until her second daughter was two years old. She cried often and was very skinny. When they brought her to the hospital, she was diagnosed with congenital heart disease. They were advised to have a check-up every six months and take care of their daughter since the doctors can only start the operation when she becomes healthier.

But in early 2014, Thang suddenly had a nose bleed and was diagnosed with leukaemia.

"I nearly fainted," Huong said. "We hugged each other and cried that night. He wanted to save all the money for our daughter but I tried to borrow money for him. When he felt well, he could still repair vehicles for some money. It lasted for six years."

Thang's health worsened in the past six months and their debts climbed to VND250m. They can't afford or have time to bring their 7-year-old daughter to the hospital for a check-up.

Hoang Duc Uy, head of Lien Ngac Residential Cluster, said, "Both of Huong and Thang's parents are poor so they can't help them much. What we worry now is their daughter's health, she's still too small. I hope they will get help from the community."
