Tran Trieu Van, 10, is staying at the National Institute of Haematology & Blood Transfusion in Hanoi for the treatment. Dr Vo Thi Thanh Binh from the hospital said that she was in the list of patients waiting for haematopoietic stem cell transplant which has a success rate of up to 80%. However, her family is too poor to cover it.
Van is on the verge of death
Tran Viet Thanh, the girl’s father, said that he tried to borrow money from different sources but failed. His wife now has to take care of the two other children, one aged 11 months old and the other 12 years old.
Van used to be in good health condition and familiar with helping her parents with farming work. She could travel a long distance from home to school. But, in October last year, she suddenly faced long consecutive fevers and was diagnosed with leukaemia.
Dr. Binh added that Van’s surgery would cost VND500 million (USD21,739). Luckily, through tests, doctors found that her 12-year-old older sister’s hematopoietic stem cell suits her.
There is a promising opportunity for a cure, but her parents are totally powerless due to their poverty. Going to school and working in fields is now her only memory.
