In 2015, Pham Thi Hue, 38, from Thanh Van Commune was diagnosed with Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura which is a rare disease but has a high risk of death.
Doctors at Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi said that she needs intensive treatment for around three weeks to survive. However, the treatment was very costly at roughly VND20 million (USD869.56) per day.

Due to the financial difficulties, Hue's husband, Nguyen Xuan Hoa, 42, even had to sell their house to cover the treatment fees. However, the money from the sale was only enough for 13 days of Hue's treatment.
After an article was published on Dantri/DTiNews, many readers donated to help Hue. She then received donations of VND300 million (USD13,043).
Her husband used part of the donation to assist other patients at the hospital who also faced financial difficulties.
