Drink driving law proves effective as traffic accidents decrease
"We don't know if those accidents were alcohol-related or not. Only when the victims are brought to hospital and tested would doctors know for sure," he said.
Doctors at Vietnam-Germany Hospital said all traffic accident victims all had blood alcohol tests. Dr Do Manh Hung said from January 1 to 6, the hospital received 305 traffic accident cases, 46 cases or 12% of the victims had drunk alcohol.
"This number already decreased compared to the same period last year. There were 324 patients and 49 of them had drunk," he said.
The majority of the accidents occur at Vinh Tuy and Thanh Tri bridges are brought to Thanh Nhanh Hospital. The hospital receives 100-130 patients a day. 30% of them were admitted because of alcohol-related causes. On December 31 night and January 1 morning, the hospital received 28 traffic accident victims who had drunk.
However, in the past seven days, the number of emergencies had reduced to 60-70 cases and only 10% were alcohol-related. They haven't received any traffic accident victims who had drunk.
"During my shift on January 7, only 58 patients were admitted and the number of emergencies was reduced by half. The tests show that none of the traffic accident victims had drunk," said Dr Vu Xuan Hung from Orthopedic Department.
