Family in desperate need of help to treat two ill children

A couple in Can Tho Province are in need of financial support to cover medical treatment for two children.

Le Trong Nghia and Nguyen Thi Thao have four children together but two of their children are ill. Their oldest daughter, 12-year-old Le Thi Thao Nguyen, has ischemic heart disease. She has breathing difficulties, nausea and vomiting. Their third daughter, 5-year-old Le Thi Kim Ngan, has leukaemia and has received chemotherapy for over a year.

"We’ve lived on the near-poverty line for years. We don't have stable jobs but we have an old mother, four children and a sister that has epilepsy after an accident. What we made was enough to support our family but after Ngan fell ill, the situation became very difficult," Thao said.

Ngan suddenly urinated blood in 2018 and had a high fever for days. She was diagnosed with leukaemia after being brought to the hospital. Ngan needs special medicines that cost millions of VND. Ngan's father works as a bricklayer for VND350,000 a day. It was not enough to pay for her treatment and her siblings' tuition and food and milk for their youngest brother who is less than one year old.

"I couldn't remember how we were able to live through the past two years. I borrowed from so many people so many times that I felt embarrassed seeing them on the streets. There were times I had to borrow money from the black market with an interest rate of VND1.8m a month. I can never pay them back," Thao said.

Ngan went home after taking medicines. Doctors said her check-up was due in one month after that. But only two weeks after returning home, she had a high fever and had to be admitted again. According to doctors, there is a high risk of recurrence and metastasis of Ngan's leukaemia. They have to wait for her to be healthy again for tests.

Ngan's father can't go to work because he has to take care of ill daughters in different hospitals.

"We are already deep in debts. I don't know what we will do next," Thao said. "We'll try our best for them. If we break down now then who will my children depend on?"
