Severely-injured man gets help from readers

A young man in Nam Dinh Province has survived from serious injuries after a fall thanks to medical efforts and donations from the public.

After finishing his military service, Nguyen Dac Son asked his parents to borrow VND200m to help him join a guest worker programme. While he was taking a Japanese course in Hanoi, Son fell from 15 metres and suffered collapsed lungs and his ribs, collar bones, jaw and many other breaks.

His family had already sold everything they could and borrowed money to treat him. After nine operations and eight blood dialysis sessions, Son's situation has improved but he still needs long-term and costly treatment. It already cost them VND600m (USD26,000) after one month in the hospital. However, his family had run out of money and thought of bringing him home several times.

After knowing his story, readers donated VND102,755,000 to Son via Dantri Newspaper. Many people have called and donated to his family directly.

"Many people sent us money, gifts and food. Some people sat with us for hours and encouraged us even though we had just met then," said Nguyen Dac Linh, Son's father.

Linh said he was too moved and didn't know what to say so he wrote a thank-you note to the doctors and kind people who have helped them during the most difficult times.

"I'm only a farmer and don't know how to express my feelings. We thought Son wouldn't be able to overcome this," Linh said. "Thanks to everyone that we have today."
