Flooding on Nguyen Huu Canh Street

Nguyen Vinh Ninh, deputy director of the Management Board of Traffic Constructions in HCM City, said they would start upgrading Nguyen Huu Canh Street from October 5 and the construction is expected to be completed after 14 months.

They will level up subsided areas. About 60 out of 459 trees will be cut down for the project. But the authorities will plant 130 new trees afterwards.

Many people have questioned the city's budget management because in 2017, the authorities already rented a super pump for VND14bn (USD605,000) a year for seven years.

Vo Van Hoan, vice chairman of HCM City People's Committee, said they had warned the contractors that they must make ensure Nguyen Huu Hoan Street and the residential houses will not be flooded. In regards to the giant pump, Hoan said the pump would be moved to another place.

"The pump is only a temporary solution anyway. The city will have a plan to make full use of the pump," he said.

Nguyen Huu Canh Street was built in1997 and completed in 2002. It was hoped that the street would help deal with the traffic problems but in reality, this street suffers from subsidence and has been regularly flooded for 16 years.

Statistics in 2004 showed that at some locations, the street had subsided by 60cm. In 2005, the street subsided by 70-80cm.

HCM City authorities have spent a huge amount of money every year to fix the street. The overpass on Nguyen Huu Canh Street is also deteriorating and needs VND13bn for repair.
