Police announced on Sunday afternoon that they carried out a raid at 2 pm on July 27 at the Our City Urban Area in Hai Phong City's Duong Kinh District and detained more than 380 Chinese people.

According to initial reports from police, the 380 Chinese nationals fielded online wagers from Chinese punters on sports betting and ran an illegal lottery.

Police confiscated nearly 2,000 smartphones, 530 computers, bank cards and cash at the site. Initial investigations showed that the ring had transacted online bets worth more than three billion yuan (USD435 million).

Most forms of gambling are illegal for locals in Vietnam, but the country has in recent years been used as a venue for online betting rings run by gangs from China and Taiwan.

Police are further investigating the case.
