The shipwreck detected in July last year was initially believed to contain high-end ceramic products of China’s 16th century Minh Dynasty.

The objects excavated from the ship
Under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s permission, Vietnam National Museum of History co-operated with Quang Ngai’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to conduct an excavation worth VND48.4 billion (USD2.1 million) from the state budget.
However, after a year’s excavation, the results have not been as expected. The excavated objects which are Chinese ceramics were mostly broken into small pieces.
According to Nguyen Minh Tri, director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, despite the number of finds were limited and could be used for scientific research purpose.
Meanwhile, the ship is buried under the wharf, posing difficulties for the excavation.
The excavation has been halted to wait for an official decision of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Tri noted.
