Kim said that he came to Vietnam in July 2014 and after that worked for several tourism companies in Danang and Nha Trang cities as a tour guide. However, due to owing money after gambling losses, he had to provide his passport as collateral. He wanted to live in Vietnam for a long time.

Quang Ninh police found another South Korean man named Kim Yung Kun, 59, at a guesthouse in Ha Long City who also had his passport taken as collateral due to the same reason with Kim Tae Yoon. Kim Yung Kun also worked as an illegal tour guide to earn his living.

The police handed over the men to the Vietnam Immigration Department before they face being expelled from the country.

The local police also found several Chinese people illegally living in the city.
