According to Minh, over the past two weeks, HCM City police have raided three huge drug trafficking rings capturing nearly a tonne in drugs.

The Ministry of Public Security have focused on raiding drug smuggling in northern central areas bordering Laos. This has led criminals to choose HCM City as their drug transit point, Minh added.

The city is showing signs of becoming a transit point for drugs to be distributed to other countries later, he noted.

The drugs seized by the HCM City police

On March 20, the city police conducted a seizure involving 16 Chinese citizens and three Vietnamese accused of running a major drug ring under the guise of a textile business.

Police found 300 kilos of methamphetamine in a luxury home in the bust and said the ring likely extended to other branches in the country.

Two days later, the HCM City and Filipino police co-operated to seize 270 kilos of meth transported to the Philippines via sea.
