More people buy pork at supermarkets following the African swine fever
By March 16, a total number of 26,807 pigs had been culled due to the fever, including up to 10,000 in Thai Binh.
According to Director of the Department of Animal Health Pham Van Dong, many traders have still transported and slaughtered African swine fever-contracted pigs for benefits, which is among major reasons for the disease’s spread.
A pig farm owner in Bac Ninh said that veterinary staff had worked with affected households to fight against the epidemic, but there are no vaccines against the disease. They have just focused on sterlisation and separation of healthy pigs.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong urged the Department of Animal Health to assess all causes of the African swine fever to find the main ones.
Sterilisation at pig farms needs to be tightened. Localities have to concentrate on raising people’s awareness of the epidemic to avoid mass sales of sick pigs.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has also requested to closely supervise of the transport of decorative pigs of unclear origin.
