Over 500 patients visited the new branches of Bach Mai and Vietnam-Germany hospitals in Ha Nam on their opening day on October 21.

Dr Nguyen Quoc Anh, director of Bach Mai Hospital, said the Ha Nam branch had 1,000 beds and the doctors could receive 5,000 patients per day. The hospital covers 123,000 square metres and is fully equipped for various illnesses.

The hospital also calls for doctors in Hanoi to volunteer working in Ha Nam.

Vietnam-Germany Hospital has also opened a new branch in Ha Nam with 1,000 beds and capacity to receive 3,500 patients per day. The new branch is specialised in surgery, treatment of illnesses and injuries related to bone, skull, brain, head, neck, chest, spine, and cardiovascular surgery.

Ministry of Health hopes that the new branches in Ha Nam will help ease overcrowding problem in Hanoi hospitals. Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi receives 10,000 patients each day. Both of the main hospitals have 3,000 to 6,000 in-patient every day. However, the Ha Nam branches haven't fully completed yet.

"Both of the branches will be completed in 2019 and will be able to receive patients who are terminally ill. A number of patients who have been admitted at oncology department or receiving kidney dialysis in Hanoi can be transferred to Ha Nam. We'll continue developing health care system in wards and communes in the future," said Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien.

The investments for Bach Mai and Vietnam-Germany branches are over VND4trn (USD172m) each. Three main hospitals in the southern region will also have new branches built to ease overcrowding.

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam praised the quality of the facilities and urged for management reform at hospitals to improve service quality.

"The staff will have to bear heavy responsibilities. Adjustments are unavoidable when the hospitals are just put into operation so both of the hospitals must work closely with each other," he said.
