A residential area in Hanoi’s suburbs has been totally isolated by flood water for around two weeks.

Ben Voi Hamlet in Can Huu Commune, Quoc Oai District is surrounded by water.

Many areas in Ben Voi are up to 1.5 metres underwater.

Local people have to use boats to travel.

Nguyen Van Tung, a local resident, said that the hamlet had been flooded for many times but this year and 2008 were the worst.

The flooding has severely affected local people, particularly school children.

According to Quoc Oai District People’s Committee, more than 1,200 hectares of rice, 300 hectares of aquaculture, 100 hectares of fruit trees and 52,000 poultries have been ruined by the flooding.

Up to 500 households with 1,537 people have been flooded. Can Huu, Liep Tuyet and Phu Cat communes are the hardest-hit.
