The 10-metre high gate was apparently knocked down by strong winds at around 3:30 pm on May 14, falling onto a 21-year-old local man. He was concussed and taken to hospital.

The welcome gates at Nguyen Hue pedestrian street were installed on April 27 and were set to remain in place until June 17 to mark major dates. The work was carried out by the Vien Dong Company.

District 1 authorities and the Vien Dong Company are investing what caused the problem and will compensate the victim.
The Vien Dong Company previously had to pay USD1,000 to a foreign tourist who tripped on a iron hook in Ho Chi Minh City after the firm admitted negligence.
