On March 14, five people in Ca Ry Commune namely Hoih Nhan, BNuocch Cheo, A Viet Giang, A Lang Minh and Bo Nuoch A Chum drank alcohol bought from a local shop. After that, they all had breathing difficulties and passed out and then were taken to hospital.

A Lang Minh, Bo Nuoch A Chum and A Viet Giang died, while the two others are still in critical condition.

The deaths were suspected to have been caused by alcohol poisoning.

On March 12, three people in the central province of Nghe An also died after drinking alcohol soaked in plants taken from a local forest. Meanwhile, another in the group has been hospitalised in critical condition.

The Ministry of Health has raised concerns over the grave consequences of alcohol poisoning which only accounts for 1-2% of the annual food poisoning cases but the fatalities account for 7%. In many cases, several members of a family died after a party.

Stomach cancer, strokes and even mental illnesses can be caused by alcohol. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 5-6% of the patients are ill because of alcohol and this rate is increasing, the ministry warned.

The Ministry of Health will try to complete the Law on Alcohol Harm Reduction this year. Consumers are advised to only use alcohol of clear origins.
