UN launches Vietnamese rural women photo contest

UN Women, with the support of the Australian and Canadian embassies in Vietnam have just launched a photo contest on Vietnamese rural women and sustainable development.

UN Women, with the support of the Australian and Canadian embassies in Vietnam have just launched a photo contest on Vietnamese rural women and sustainable development.

The competition which is part of activities to commemorate International Women’s Day aims to recognise rural women’s contribution to the growth and prosperity of Vietnam, officials said at the launch ceremony in Hanoi on March 8.

A report of Vietnam General Statistics Office in 2015 showed that women constitute a critical workforce in agricultural production, especially in rural areas where 63.4% of working women are in agriculture compared to 57.5% of working men.

Rural women are contributing significantly to Vietnam’s economic growth. However, rural women and girls are among the people most likely to be poor, to lack access to productive resources such as land, modern inputs, technology and financial services, education, healthcare and other social protection services, and to be hit hardest by climate change. On almost every measure of development, rural women, because of gender inequalities and discrimination, fare worse than rural men, the report said.

Photography can be a powerful tool to raise awareness and to trigger positive development in society and the contest is intended to give a platform to Vietnamese society to picture the positive changes they want to see regarding empowering rural women.

The competition invites Vietnamese people from all ages, to recognise rural women’s contribution through photographs.

Participants are encouraged to submit photos on the following topics; rural women and technology, rural women and sustainable agriculture, rural women and disaster/climate change, rural women in business and/or co-operatives, rural women in leadership and decision making and gender equality between rural women and men

There would be one first prize worth VND 10 million, a second prize worth VND7 million, a third prize worth VND 5 million and a public’s choice prize worth VND5 million.

Contestants can submit their images before June 8, 2018, through email: unwomen2010@gmail.com with the title Rural & Sustainable Development Photo Contest or send a CD/DVD (sealed in an envelope including the name of the photo contest) to UN Women Vietnam, 304 Kim Ma Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi, Vietnam.
