Chu Van Diep transfer the money to Hanoi Support Centre for International Tourists

The police in Ba Dinh District was informed about the case at 5 pm on March 2 by Hanoi Support Centre for International Tourists.

According to the centre, an American couple and their children took a Tien Thanh taxi from Tran Khat Chan Overpass to Yen Phu Street. The fee for 3.15km is only VND45,000 (USD2) but Diep charged them VND450,000.

The tourists took a picture of the taxi's plate number and reported it to the support centre.

The driver, Chu Van Diep, admitted having taken advantage of the language barrier to overcharge and thought that foreigners didn't understand the value of Vietnam dong.

He was fined VND6.4m. His taxi badge will be suspended for two months and his car will be confiscated for a week.

The police also asked Diep to apologise and return the money to the tourists. However, since they had already left Hanoi, the money was transferred to the Hanoi Support Centre for International Tourists.

This is not the first time Diep was reported. In last October, he also charged a Thai tourist VND820,000 (USD36) while the actual fee was only VND82,000.
