Nguyen Phuong Thao Uyen, 16, has been living with the disease since when she was just a few months old. Since then, she has had to live based on the blood purchased from different sources.
After a workplace accident many years ago, Uyen’s mother Nguyen Thi Huong faced meningitis. Following long-term treatment, her condition improved but her heath remains weak and she suffers from epilepsy.

Huong mostly stays at home and can’t do hard work, leaving the family burden on her father Nguyen Ba Tinh who tried his best to support the family. He was hired to take care of a garden in District 1. Taking advantage time at noon, he pruned trees on streets to earn extra income. He had to work up to 18 hours a day.
In 2013, Uyen’s condition worsened and doctors said that she needed an urgent surgery to remove part of her spleen. The family had to hire a small land plot to set up a temporary house to live in.
Tinh, however, suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2015.
After Tinh died, his wife and daughter moved to live in his own mother’s house. However, she is poor and old, so she can’t help them.

Uyen’s mother now tries to do different kinds of jobs to earn money, but she often faints due to epilepsy.
After the father’s death, Uyen stopped going to class to sell lottery to support the family. However, she often has high fevers, so the agent no longer uses her.
According to doctors, Uyen needs another operation to remove part of her liver due to complications caused by the disease, which her family can’t afford.
