The number of road accidents was 33% higher compared to the 2017 New Year holiday, the number of injuries was also 37% higher while the number of fatalities decreased by 15.2%, the report said.

While the committee said there was no serious accident, some notable cases included a truck-motorbike collision on December 30 in the southern province of Binh Dinh which killed two people on the motorbike.

On the morning of December 31, a motorbike clashed with a passenger bus in Phu Binh District in the northern province of Thai Nguyen, leaving two children, aged 11 and 8, dead.

At 3pm on January 1, 2018, a collision between a tank truck and a motorbike killed two people on the outskirts of Hanoi at Thuong Tin District.

Serious traffic jams have also been reported on many streets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City during the first and the last day of the three-day holiday.
