Couple on the brink of death fear for children's future

A couple in Ninh Binh Province who are both suffering from cancer are calling for help to support their five children.

Tran Thi Huong and her husband can only afford to buy one set of meal each day while struggling against cancer at Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi.

"My husband was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. He was operated once and had seven chemotherapy sessions and 10 radiotherapy sessions. He is very weak now and the tumour has spread to the brain," Huong said.

She has also suffered from thyroid cancer in the past six months.

Both Huong and her husband are farmers with five children. They already struggled to support the family and now the situation worsened. Huong's husband said his death was imminent so his only wish was for the children to be healthy and keep going to school.

Tran Thi Minh Hang, a social worker at Bach Mai Hospital, said, "We showed them how to ask for help from social organisations. We hope the community will provide help so that the couple can continue treatment and their children can go to school."

Huong said, "Sometimes, we didn't even have VND1,000. Sometimes, I just want to die but then who will take care of my children?"
