Hanoi’s authorities have commemorated victims and soldiers who lost their lives during the US Christmas bombings in December 1972.
On December 26, Hanoi Party Secretary Hoang Trung Hai and other leaders of the city came to the B52 Monument in Hanoi’s Kham Thien Street to burn incense for the victims.

Earlier on December 22, the Hanoi Peace Committee and the city’s chapter of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha also held a requiem to pray for the victims.
During the night of December 26, 1972, densely-populated residential areas in Hanoi including Kham Thien Street, housing in An Duong Street and even Bach Mai Hospital, were relentlessly attacked by a large number of US B52 aircraft.
As many as 278 people, including 91 women, 40 elderly and 55 children were killed and 178 children were orphaned during that air raid.
In remembrance of the victims, a memorial was erected at a bombsite at 51 Kham Thien Street. The house at 51 Kham Thien was destroyed by US bombing on December 26 killing seven people.
