The incident happened at 1:30 pm on December 11 at Van Mon Primary School, Yen Phong District. Some pupils were playing on the second floor, pushing one another onto the balcony when part of the balcony suddenly collapsed.

As a result, 13 pupils fell to the ground with eight serious cases sent to Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi for the treatment.
Dr Pham Quoc Khanh from Viet Duc Hospital said that three pupils with light injuries have been taken home. One had urgent surgery due to a broken shoulder bone and traumatic brain injury, while the four others are suspected to have suffered from blood on the brain.

Leaders from Yen Phong District’s education and training board came to hospitals to visit the pupils and supported their families VND4 million (USD181.8) each.
Van Mon Primary School which was built many years ago has deteriorated and the district has planned to rebuild the school.
