In September, Ngoc was admitted to HCM City National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion. With health insurance, Ngoc's family has to pay VND7m (USD308) but this sum is still too high for the poor family that has borrowed lots of money.
Giau said they had rice fields but the crops were bad this year because of unfavourable weather. Giau and her husband work as workers at a textile company in HCM City. After Ngoc fell ill, Giau has to stay home to take care of her so they all depend on the monthly salary of VND5m (USD220) of her husband.
They have to pay house rent, VND1.2m (USD52) monthly treatment and medicines for Ngoc and other expenses.
"We have spent all our savings and borrowed some more. We really don't want to bring Ngoc home but don't know how to continue her treatment," Giau said.
