Embassy announces Las Vegas shooting hotlines for Vietnamese

The Vietnamese Embassy in the US has announced two hotlines to provide timely assistance for Vietnamese in need after the Las Vegas shooting on Oct 1.

The Vietnamese Embassy in the US has announced two hotlines to provide timely assistance for Vietnamese in need after the Las Vegas shooting on Oct 1.

The numbers are 202-716-8666 and 202-368-2265.

The embassy said it stood ready to provide consular assistance to any Vietnamese who may have been affected.

Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Pham Quang Vinh provided constant updates on the gunfire and close contact with the Las Vegas Department of Police and Department of Foreign Office to follow the situation of the Vietnamese community in the city.

He noted that the Las Vegas authorities have pledged to quickly provide information for the Vietnamese Embassy through a hotline if they discover any Vietnamese casualties, whether they are Vietnamese tourists or expatriates.

It is reported that many Vietnamese were working in the area where the shootings occurred at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. However, most of them work in the service industry, such as cleaning and dealers, while the music concert was held outdoors.

According to Nextshark.com, a Vietnamese American woman, Michelle Vo, died from the shooting.

Kody Robertson, a concertgoer who had met Vo that night, was right next to her when the shots rang out. The 32-year-old salesman from Hilliard initially thought it was fireworks. As people realised what was going on and started scrambling, he saw Vo fall, Nextshark reported.

Robertson and others carry Vo away from the chaos, then performed CPR on her. Soon after, a man in a pickup truck came and they loaded her up in the back to take her to the hospital. That would be the last time Robertson saw Vo.

Michelle lived in California’s Eagle Rock neighbourhood and worked as an agent and financial services professional for New York Life in Greater Pasadena, the site said.

On October 2, President Tran Dai Quang and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc sent their condolences to US President Donald Trump over the tragic gun attack which killed at least 59 people and injured 527 others.
