Hundreds of motorbikes on September 6 experienced deliberately placed nails which have given them flat tyres on a highway linking the northern province of Bac Giang and Hanoi.

Colonel Nguyen Hong Vi, head of Bac Ninh Province’s Police Department, said that the department had received many calls on the morning of September 6 about the nail traps on the road section running through Bac Giang Province’s Viet Yen District and Bac Ninh City.

Police checked the road section and confirmed the reports.

Vi noted that the nails used looks quite different from normal and seemed to be home-made, so, it might have been dropped from trucks, but not put on the road on purpose by someone.

It took up to several hours for the police and people who live nearly the road section with ‘nail traps’ to gather the nails.

Repair fees are quite high for each tyre patch, ranging from VND50,000 (USD2.20) to VND80,000 (USD3.60) compared to the normal price of just VND30,000. Many motorbikes had several tyre patches due to being hit by many nails.

So, to help reduce the prices, the police called on motorcycle mechanics in Bac Ninh City and nearby people to help drivers. This also helped them not have to wait for so long.

Warning signs were also set up so that people could know to avoid the nail traps.

The police said that they are investigating the case.
