Vietnam, Myanmar set up comprehensive cooperative partnership

Vietnam and Myanmar agreed to establish comprehensive cooperative partnership on the occasion of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s State visit to Myanmar from August 24-26.

Vietnam and Myanmar agreed to establish comprehensive cooperative partnership on the occasion of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s State visit to Myanmar from August 24-26.

During the visit, Party leader Trong held talks with Myanmar President Htin Kyaw, met with State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and other officials.

Leaders of the two countries said the visit is an important historic milestone in the history of Vietnam-Myanmar relations and it would help elevate the bilateral ties to new levels.

The leaders expressed pleasure at the fast advancement of the bilateral traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation in recent years, affirming their resolve to further improve the effectiveness of their cooperation in all channels.

They expressed their belief that the new comprehensive cooperative partnership would help promote and enhance the current cooperative mechanisms and open up new opportunities for bilateral cooperation in line with the UN and ASEAN Charters, the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia as well as international standards that are widely recognized.

The new partnership will focus on five pillars, namely politics; defense and security; economy; culture-society, and people-to-people exchanges; and regional and international cooperation.

The two sides tasked their foreign ministries to coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies in proposing feasible initiatives for the aforesaid cooperative areas.

Both sides agreed to foster political ties through the exchanges of visits and contacts at all levels, enhance Government-to-Government cooperation, and strive to improve the effectiveness of economic, cultural, scientific and technological cooperation.

The two sides agreed to take measures to improve investment environments and strengthen trade and investment promotion and facilitation to raise the two-way trade value to US$1 billion in the coming time.

The leaders also agreed to further boost information technology and telecommunication cooperation.

The leaders shared their views on regional peace and security issues, reiterating their commitments to enhance bilateral defense and security cooperation through sharing information and experience and promoting the existing mechanisms while considering the establishment of defense policy dialogue and joint working group between the two defense ministries.

The two sides expressed their pleasure at good coordination at regional and international forums like ASEAN and the United Nations.

Party leader Trong spoke highly of Myanmar’s support for Vietnam to win a seat on the UN Security Council in the tenure 2020-2021.

Both sides welcomed continued cooperation for effective and sustainable management and use of the Mekong water resources as it is of multi-faceted significance for countries along the river, and for the process of ASEAN connectivity and community building to maintain the bloc’s stability and development.

The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to maintain and promote peace, security, and stability in the region and to settle disputes via peaceful measures in compliance with the widely-recognized principles of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The two sides also reaffirmed their support for full and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and for early conclusion of a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) based on the agreed COC framework.
