There are no traffic accidents or other incident occurred prior to the congestion that started at around 8 am. Few vehicles used the newly-built flyover and the roads below were jammed.
Dozens of traffic police, airport security and local guards were sent out but couldn't deal with the situation. Other roads around Tan Son Nhat Airport such as Bach Dang and Hong Ha streets also faced congestion later.
Motorbike drivers walked with their vehicles to enter the airport. Other passengers also had to abandon taxis or buses to walk to the airport.
The Y-shaped flyover on Truong Son Street has just been opened on July 3 to help drivers access the airport faster and avoid the congestion at the intersections with Hong Ha and Bach Dang streets. The locals said they had never seen such severe congestion before the flyover was built.
The situation only improved at 1.30 pm.
