A corner of Tan Son Nhat Airport
The work must be done in an independent manner to ensure the expansion project will achieve maximum efficiency, said the PM at a meeting with several concerned ministries on June 12.
The results are to be reported to the government by the end of the year.
PM Phuc said he values the opinions of the National Assembly deputies, experts, the media and HCMC Secretary Nguyen Thien Nhan, concerning the Tan Son Nhat expansion.
Minister and Chairman of the Government Office Mai Tien Dung quoted the defence minister as saying that the ministry is willing to hand over the military-controlled land near Tan Son Nhat for the airport expansion if needed.
Meanwhile the prime minister asked the defence minister to order a halt to all construction work on a golf course built on a military plot of land adjacent to Tan Son Nhat, pending further research.
Minister Mai Tien Dung said the government will consider various plans for the airport expansion, so that final plan will be the fastest, safest, most efficient and cost-effective.
In the meantime, it remains necessary to accelerate the Long Thanh Airport project, which is located in Ho Chi Minh City’s neighbouring province of Dong Nai, said the Prime Minister.
In recent years, the strong growth of air travel has left Tan Son Nhat, the only airport serving Ho Chi Minh City, severely overloaded, while construction on Long Thanh Airport has yet to begin and the airport will not be put into operation until 2025.
