Nhan has replaced his predecessor Dinh La Thang who was removed from the Politburo early this month for committing “very serious wrongdoings and violations in management” as being the Chairman of PetroVietnam between 2009 and 2011.

Thang, who was removed from being the HCM City Party Secretary for the 2015-2020 term, has been assigned to be Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee's Economic Commission.
Thang sent his congratulations to Nhan for his new position. He expressed his great thanks to the support of the HCM City authorities as well as people for his work over the past time.
Thang also apologised for his mistakes looked forward to his new work.
Receiving the appointment decision, Nhan promised to try his best for the southern metro’s socio-economic development.
Professor. Dr. Nguyen Thien Nhan was born in 1953 in the southern province of Tra Vinh. He took different positions in HCM City before 1983 when he started working as a lecture at the HCM City University of Technology.
After studying in Germany, he returned to work at the HCM City University of Technology, acting as the university’s vice head until 1997 before being appointed to be director of the municipal Department of Science, Technology and Environment.
Between 1999 and 2006, he held the position of vice chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee.
He served as minster for Education and Training from July 2006 and August 2007 and after that he became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training.
In May 2013, he was elected to the Politburo member and since September 2013, he has held the position of Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front.
