Vietnam has set a target to earn a total export value for beer, alcohol and beverages of USD450 million by 2020.

Beer output is forecast to reach 4.6 billion litres by 2025, while the figure would be 350 million litres of alcohol and 9.1 million litres of beverages.  Drinks are expected to bring the country a combined export value of USD600 million.

The plan said that the beer production will be boosted in regions with modest beer output, including the northern region, the Central Highlands and the Mekong Delta.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade plans to invest a total VND27.32 trillion (USD1.3 billion) for the beer, alcohol and beverage sector between 2016 and 2020, with the majority for beer production.

Meanwhile, the investment for the sector will be raised to VND28.75 trillion for the 2021-2025 period.

Vietnam currently stands at the fifth position in the top ten Asian beer-drinking countries, just behind Japan, the Republic of Korea, Thailand and China.

The Vietnam Beer, Alcohol and Beverage Association estimated that Vietnamese people drank 3.4 billion litres of beer in 2015, up 10% compared to 2014 and 40.7% against 2010.

However, health experts said that alcohol abuse was becoming an increasingly serious problem in Vietnam.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s statistics show 68% of domestic violence were the result of alcohol, and 38% of incidents of public disorder and accidents were directly attributable to drinking.
