AAG cable breaks again

The Asia-America Gateway (AAG), a 20,000-kilometre-long submarine communications cable system that links South East Asia directly with the US broken again on August 2, with Storm Nida suspected to be the culprit.

According to internet service providers, the cable section from Vietnam to Hong Kong might be damaged and slow connectivity in Vietnam, especially to overseas servers like YouTube or Facebook. Many people have complained that they couldn't download large files or access certain websites located overseas.

The cable connects Vietnam with Hong Kong and then to the US. It transfers over 60% of total international data going to and from Vietnam. The AAG cable system also branches into the Philippines, Brunei and Malaysia.

In 2014, Vietnam's internet connectivity suffered as the AAG broke twice in July and September. In 2015, it broke three times and since then it has gone under two maintenance, both times badly affected the internet connection.

Local internet providers are speeding up investment to Asia-Pacific Gateway (APG), the 11,000-kilometre-long undersea cable system linking 8 countries and regions in Asia-Pacific with an initial bandwidth of 4 Tbps, to make it go live in Vietnam this year. The APG will help ease the data flow of the AAG and ensure connectivity from Vietnam to the world is more stable. Even when the AAG breaks again, Vietnam’s international Internet traffic should be less affected.
