A father in Nghe An Province is calling for help to treat his new-born son's respiratory disease after his wife died from rabies.
Truong Van Minh said he had temporarily stopped working to hold funeral for his wife, taking care of their four year-old son at home and the new-born son in hospital. "I can only look at him for a few minutes outside of the isolation room but I just need to see him every day. I have asked my parents to look after my oldest son," Minh said.

Minh and his wife, Nguyen Thi Tin, won the bid for a forest land to build a farm there. Five months ago, a group of wild dogs suddenly ran into their farm to hunt their livestock. Minh's wife, who was pregnant, was bitten when trying to chase the dogs away.
Fearing that rabies vaccination would badly affect the child, they decided to stay home.
"We were careless too because according to folk sayings, if the patients do not show symptoms after three months and ten days then they probably don't have the disease. When my wife said she was tired and her leg itched, I didn't think that she was infected," Minh said.

When Minh's wife was admitted to hospital on June 8, she didn't have any chance to survive so doctors decided to carry out a C-section to deliver the child at 33 weeks. After being born, the boy didn't breathe and was put on ventilator. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with infant respiratory distress syndrome.
Dr Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy from Nghe An General Hospital said because the family couldn't afford the surfactant therapy that cost VND14m (USD636) per dose, they chose a less expensive treatment but still costly and is not as effective. Thuy said the boy's condition didn’t improve and there were several expensive medicines not covered in his health insurance.
