150 maps, documents and clips related to the establishment of Vietnam sovereignty on the Spratly and Paracel Islands since the 17th Century are on display at a three-day exhibition in Nghe An Province.
Documents and photos of the islands during the French colonial period and American War as well as research works of various local and foreign academics were also presented at the exhibition.
Old documents from the Nguyen Dynasty consist of management policies over the Spratly and Paracel islands were also included in the administrative documents of Southern Vietnamese government from 1954 to 1975 and of Socialist Republic of Vietnam after 1975.
"We want to reinforce our unity and sense of responsibility, especially of young people, on national sovereignty. It's also a reminder and contribution to the work and sacrifice of previous generations," said Le Ngoc Hoa, vice chairman of Nghe An Province.
The exhibition is also part of the celebration for World Environment Day on June 5, World Ocean Day on June 8 and opening Vietnam's Ocean and Island Week. The exhibition also emphasise on the importance of ocean on people's lives, response to activities to reduce climate change and preserve marine environment.
Nghe An has 82km of coastal line and located in strategic location that can boost marine economy. Disputes on the sea and pollution have badly affected the environment as well as people's lives. Local authorities held various events to encourage more environment-friendly lifestyle, pay visits to people living in remote islands and clean up the beaches.
The exhibition will be opened from June 3 to June 5.
